3 Ellen & I roomed together on our big Chorale tour. We sang at different locations, & stayed in people's homes in various places. We sang in some town's high school, & the kids were so excited to meet all of us. After the concert, a group of kids were begging us to go to a pizza place where all the kids sang along & drank beer. It really was fun.We told them we could go with them , but we had to be back & our assigned home @ 11:00. We went, drank a little beer, & got back maybe 15 minutes late. We talked to the lady there, apologized for being a little late, & it was no problem AT ALL. The next day, for no apparent reason & without telling me, Ellen decided to go to our choir director, Mr. Bates, & make a HUGE MOUNTAIN out of a mole hill. She confided to him that we had done a terrible crime. She confessed that we had gone out, drank beer (insinuating that we got drunk & did who knows what), & had come in late, thus, causing our hostess to worry & embarrassed our choir. After "her little confession", Mr. Bates called a meeting with the choir & all the chaperones. He made the announcement that we had broken the rules & shamed the choir, & for that, we had to be punished. ( I'm sure everyone thought we had stayed out half the night.)The highlight of the entire trip was going to this gorgeous church in Colorado, & singing a difficult song that our choir especially liked. For our punishment Ellen & I had to sit on the front row of the church, & were not allowed to sing with the choir. It was humiliating. I never said a thing about it to Ellen.

I never could understand why she had done that. The only reason I could come up with was that maybe she thought it would show him how honest she was. I really don't know. We weren't that late, & to my knowledge, we hadn't done anything all that bad.

Kirby Gordon's mother, Peg Gordon, was a chaporone on that tour, & I know she has never forgotten. Oddly enough, I am currently the Chaplain in DAR, & she is in our chapter. I can't remember a time I have been more shamed.
