I think because she hoped for a better year, each year.  Don’t we all!

She loved Caviar and Champagne.  I remember one year she was babysitting Bob Hershfeld’s apartment over on Osborn.  She had three or four different bottles of Champagne for the two of us And a few different kinds of Caviar.

In the last few years, since we both became such old farts, it was usually an early dinner, followed by Champagne and Caviar and then a movie and to bed, hours before midnight.

Her favorite Champagne was Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne and her favorite Caviar was Romanoff Black Whitefish Caviar.

Last year was the last time we were able to find it. Seems Romanoff stopped making it.  Figures, why else would it be our favorite, he he he.

She always asked me chop up a hardboiled egg finely, usually never used it, and an onion, she loved having lots of options with her food.  She would rather have ten tiny portions of different things than one large portion of one yummy thing. She loved variety.

She also love Pepperidge Farms butterfly crackers.  She loved them with Caviar and Cream Fresh, she loved them with just butter, and she just loved them.

Naturally, Pepperidge Farms stopped making them available.  Pepperidge Farms does have a product called Quartet in which the butterfly crackers are available, along with three other variety crackers.

So, all year long now, in preparation of the fall and winter holidays, I would buy the Pepperidge Farms Quartet and eat all the crackers except the butterfly crackers.  So, now, I have a cabinet filled with about ten packages of Ellen’s butterfly crackers………..

Also, one of Ellen’s favorite TV shows was Absolutely Fabulous (Ab Fab).  Edina, the main character, remodels her kitchen and installs an automated vending machine filled with hundreds of bottles of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne.  If you go to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....w1cNE0kWiE
If you look closely, you will notice the large cabinet in the background?  If you look closely you will see stacks of shelves of bottles of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne.  In one of the episodes, she demonstrates how it works, Patsy (Edina’s slut side kick) in a panic, takes out the last bottle.  Oh my gosh.  Edina walks up, pushes a button on the side and whole new stacks of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne bottles appears.  Thank goodness, don’t know what Patsy would do if they actually did run out of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne.

Below is a photo of one such New Year’s celebration in the apartment of Dino DeConcini, with Caviar in hand, and by the expression on Michael McCleave’s face, after a few bottles of Champagne, we cheered in the New Year together.  Late eighties, maybe early nineties.  Dino DeConcini, Ellen, Michael McCleave and me.
